What is the Social Work Compact?

An interstate compact is a legal contract between two or more states/territories that would enable social workers to practice in each other’s jurisdiction, giving members of the profession more license mobility. On April 12th, 2024, the Social Work Licensure compact officially became enacted in seven states. This meant that the compact now had enough states to begin implementation planning.

As of this writing, 22 states had passed compact legislation and 3 more have legislation pending. Here is a link to the announcement from the SW compact organizers that outlines the timeline and process for implementing the compact.
