About the Course

This course reviews parts of the Indian Health Manual which outlines the uniform clinical guidelines for health professionals treating patients at Indian Health Service (IHS) hospitals, health centers, and health facilities. This manual was provided by the IHS to address patients who present for services at IHS facilities. This course focuses on those patients who are victims of Sexual Assault (Chapter 29) or those who are victims of Intimate Partner Violence (Chapter 31). High rates of sexual assault and intimate partner violence are reported among American Indians and Alaska Natives and both pose a significant public health problem that can have devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities.

This course is based on the reading online article, Chapter 29: Sexual Assault and Chapter 31: Intimate Partner Violence created by Indian Health Service in 2013.

Target Audience

Professionals dealing with American Indians and Alaska Natives patients who live on tribal lands. This course is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify partner violence and seuxal assault, and describe interventions that are patient-centric cultrually sensitive and trauma-informed.
  2. 2 Outline proper procedures of evidence collection in various types of cases.
  3. 3 State the diffences in consent among the various types of patients.
