About the Course

Social workers have been increasingly using technology to deliver services to clients, communicate with clients, gather information about clients, communicate with and about colleagues, and educate students and practitioners new ethical challenges come to the forefront. Recently, these dramatic changes in the ways that social workers use technology have led to major efforts to develop new ethical standards in the profession. This course discusses the importance of developing risk management strategies and contains recommendations for the ethical use of social media.
There are two articles that must be read for this course.

This course is based on the article, Ethical Standards for Social Workers’ Use of Technology: Emerging Consensus created by Frederic G. Reamer, Ph.D. in 2018 and the article, Social Media & Social Work Ethics: Determining Best Practices in an Ambiguous Reality created by Elizabeth Harbeck Voshel, ACSW, LMSW et al. in 2015.

Frederic G. Reamer, Ph.D.
Dr. Reamer is a professor in the graduate program of the School of Social Work, Rhode Island College, Providence, Rhode Island. He has published articles and books on professional ethics and has also lectured nationally on the topic.
Elizabeth Harbeck Voshel, ACSW, LMSW
Elizabeth Voshel worked has an associate clinical professor and director of field instruction with the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work. She has been a leader in the school’s integrative learning effort and teaches a capstone seminar. Voshel has presented nationally and internationally on field instruction curriculum and social work ethics and was employed for 22 years by the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Sandi Cardaman

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.

Target Audience

This course is recommended for all behavioral health providers. This course is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.
