About the Course

The concurrent or sequential usage of multiple substances during adolescence is a serious public health problem. These articles look at how marijuana use interacts with other substance use in social circles and how cannabis use impacts mental health diagnosis in adolescents. Pot use was found to impact the use of tobacco and alcohol and regular marijuana use was related to increased mental health diagnosis.

This course is based on the article, Marijuana Use Is Associated with Behavioral Approach and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents and Emerging Adults created by Natasha E. Wright, et al in 2016 and the article The interdependence of cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use in the context of school-based social networks created by Cheng Wang, et al in 2018.

Cheng Wang PhD
Dr. Weng is a research assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. He has done significant research on social interactions and substance use and his work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
John R. Hipp
John Hipp is a Professor, Department of Criminology, Law & Society, University of California, Irvine and also works with the Department of Sociology. He has done significant research on crime and neighborhoods and his work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Kirsta M. Lisdahl, PhD.
Dr. Lisdahl is a professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, and is the Director of the UWM’s Brain Imaging and Neuropsychology (BraIN) Laboratory. The primary focus of her research is on the neurocognitive consequences of chronic drug use during adolescence and emerging adulthood and predictors of substance use onset in youth. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who are dealing with adolescents and substance abuse, researchers. This course is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge. This course content is at the intermediate level.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss the prevalence of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol use in teens and young adults.
  2. 2 Explain how substance use spreads among peer networks, and the risk to health it poses.
  3. 3 Identify the effects marijuana use has on brain structure and how those changes relate to depression and anxiety.
