About the Course

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit substance in those diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. However, there is conflicting evidence as to whether marijuana may alleviate or exacerbate mood symptomatology. The current study aimed to determine the impact of marijuana on mood in bipolar patients and to examine whether marijuana confers an additional negative impact on cognitive function.

This course is based on the article, Joint Effects: A Pilot Investigation of the Impact of Bipolar Disorder and Marijuana Use on Cognitive Function and Mood created by Kelly A. Sagar, et al in 2016 and teh article The Relationship between Bipolar Disorder and Cannabis Use in Daily Life: An Experience Sampling Study created by Elizabeth Tyler, et al. in 2015.

Kelly A. Sagar
Kelly Sagar, PhD, is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Cognitive and Clinical Neuroimaging Core (CCNC) and Marijuana Investigations for Neuroscientific Discovery (MIND). Dr. Sagar’s research is focused on examining the impact of cannabinoid use utilizing neuropsychological measures, clinical assessments, and multimodal neuroimaging techniques. She is particularly interested in the differential impact of recreational versus medical cannabis use, and how factors such as age of onset and exposure to individual cannabinoids mediate cognitive and clinical effects. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Elizabeth Tyler
Elizabeth Tyler is a lecturer and research fellow at Lancaster University,UK. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers treating patients struggling with bipolar disorder. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Ackowledge opposing views on marijuana use in patients with bipolar disorder.
  2. 2 Identify the risks of increased manic and depressive symptoms associated with cannabis use.
  3. 3 Extrapolate the opposing data and share the information with patients with bipolar disorder who are actively using marijuana.
