About the Course

Findings show unequivocally that providing comprehensive drug abuse treatment to criminal offenders works, reducing both drug abuse and criminal recidivism. The substantial prison population in the United States is attributable in large part to drug-related offenses and is accompanied by high rates of recidivism. This article discusses treatment options for substance abuse in the criminal justice population.

Dr. Fletcher is a member of the core faculty at the Enhanced Interdisciplinary Research Training Institute on Hispanic Substance Abuse at the University of Southern California. He also works at the Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research, National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Redonna K. Chandler, Ph.D.
Dr. Redonna K. Chandler has worked as the Chief of the Services Research Branch at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health, providing scientific leadership on research intended to improve the quality of drug abuse treatment and recovery services, with a special emphasis on the implementation of evidence-based interventions. Prior to joining NIDA, she worked for the Bureau of Prisons, implementing and evaluating substance abuse treatment programs for federally sentenced offenders.
