About the Course

Bulimia nervosa is a serious mental illness with associated physical health problems and impaired psychosocial functioning. And yet, fewer than two thirds of patients with bulimia nervosa seek treatment. One barrier to seeking treatment is failure to detect a disorder or identify a need for treatment. This vignette study examined perceptions of a fictitious patient with bulimia nervosa. Specifically, we investigated whether different portrayals of the patient in terms of weight status (underweight, healthy weight, overweight) and symptom severity (daily or weekly binge eating and purging) led to differences in weight stigma and mental health stigma, whether bulimia nervosa was perceived to be a serious problem, and whether the patient was perceived to need help with weight loss and/or mental health.

  3. 3 Identify the potential implications of differing perceptions of bulimia nervosa based on weight, specifically relating to classification as a serious mental illness requiring eating-disorder treatment.
