About the Course

This course explores a lack of research about disparities in treatment access/outcomes in substance abuse treatment among underserved ethnic/cultural populations. This study uses quantitative research methods to explore the impact of race/ethnic diversity in group relapse prevention treatment as well as the impact of mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP) on treatment efficacy. Recommendations for improving the experience of all participants in culturally-diverse populations are included in the conclusions of the study.

This course is based on the article, Race/Ethnicity and Racial Group Composition Moderate the Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention for Substance Use Disorder created by Brenna L. Greenfield et al. in 2018.

Brenna L. Greenfield

Brenna Greenfield is a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health on the Duluth Campus of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her research focuses on substance use disorder treatment and recovery, prevention of opioid overdose deaths, behavioral health interventions, and American Indian health equity. She teaches first and second-year medical students about motivational interviewing and psychological interventions. She has multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Corey Roos, PhD

Dr. Roos is a clinical researcher and clinician who is dedicated to improving the accessibility, effectiveness, and efficiency of treatment for mental health and addictive disorders. He has a particular expertise in the science and practice of mindfulness-based therapies (MBT) and is a co-author of the book Mindfulness: Advances in Psychotherapy. He also has expertise in addiction treatment and most of his research to date has focused on improving substance use disorder treatment.

Kylee J. Hagler

Kylee J. Hagler is a PhD student at the University of New Mexico. Her current research focuses on the influence of stereotypical beliefs about Native American drinking on the formation of injunctive and descriptive normative beliefs about alcohol use in this population. Research interests include: development of culturally-appropriate treatments for alcohol use disorders, mechanisms of change in alcohol treatment, and conceptualization of alcohol use in culturally diverse populations.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.
