About the Course

This class navigates the Gay man’s journey during the AIDS epidemic and shows how HIV impacted community fear and trauma. It describes the history, the principles, and the ongoing uphill battle to change an archaic legal system. This video will help clinicians sort out the reasons that Gay men are far more reluctant to participate in treatment as most treatment is not designed to be culturally sensitive to their needs. Gay men tend not to expose their sexual orientation during treatment. This class discusses ways to delve deeper into the client’s relationships in order to establish an accurate history and pathway to open communication.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, The Gay Man’s Experience During the AIDS Epidemic and How It Impacted Community Trauma created by Steven Arnold, MSW in 2020.

Course Material Author

Steven Arnold, MSW
Stephen Arnold received a masters in social work (MSW) in 2011. He obtained most of his hours toward his Oregon Clinical License in Social Work (LCSW) working with youth incarceration facilities, completing his license in 2017. He also proposed and helped found a transition house for LGBT youth leaving incarceration and has worked as a mental health professional for a Job Corp school in Oregon. Stephen has a thriving private practice in Portland, Oregon and currently does online psychotherapy for his clients, many of whom are Gay men. He also completed the Drug & Alcohol Counseling Program at Portland Community College. After completing a course called Men and Addictions taught by Dennis Morrow (author of The Male Box video), Stephen was asked by Dennis to create a special class to better understand the Gay man’s experience during the AIDS Epidemic. On a personal note, Stephen Arnold is a Gay man who experienced the height of the AIDS epidemic and has actively been involved with Gay male communities. Currently living in Portland, he has lived in cities such as Philadelphia, New York City, Atlanta, and San Francisco. In addition to having been married to a man who is HIV positive, he witnessed the harm HIV/AIDS has done to his community.

Sandi Cardaman

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.

Target Audience

The main significance for licensed clinicians is that there is no graduate program that we know of in the country that offers gender-specific treatment for boys/men or for gay men and also very few, if any, professional workshops available on these topics. Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers will all benefit from this information. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe ways to build trust with clients who identify as gay boys and men.
  2. 2 Explain strategies to facilitate entry into recovery/mental health services.
  3. 3 Summarize the impact of community trauma during the AIDS epidemic.
  4. 4 Demonstrate the discrimination and prejudice historically suffered by the gay community.
