About the Course

Eating disorders are predominantly characterized by disturbances in eating behavior. The development of eating disturbances is influenced in part by individual factors, such as body shape and weight concerns, temperament, and biology. Emerging research in public health and community settings also suggests that external factors, including the food environment, sociocultural pressures, and socioeconomic factors can disrupt self-regulation of eating and contribute to the development of eating problems. However, it is unclear how these insights from public health and community perspectives can contribute to the understanding of clinical disordered eating behaviors or can inform treatment approaches to improving eating behaviors. This plenary will examine external influences on disordered eating and critically appraise their application to clinical settings and eating disorder intervention.

Rachel Rodgers, PhD, FAED

Dr. Rachel Rodgers, Ph.D. is a researcher and clinical psychologist. She trained in the UK, France and Italy, and received her Ph.D. from the University Toulouse-le Mirail (France). She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northeastern University, Boston, where she completed her Fulbright Fellowship in 2010-2011.

Dr. Rodgers is the author of over 50 journal articles and book chapters in the areas of body image, eating disorders, obesity, and related conditions, as well as the upcoming co-chair of the International Academy for Eating Disorders Body Image and Prevention Special Interest Group.

I am a Professor of Psychology at the Columbus and Marion campuses of The Ohio State University. I attended the University of Akron for my undergraduate and graduate studies, earning my B.A. in Psychology in 1995, M.A. in Counseling Psychology in 1998, and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 2001. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the counseling center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I joined the Department of Psychology at The Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor in 2001, received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2007, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2013.

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe multiple environmental, sociocultural, and socioeconomic influences on food choice and eating behaviors and the ways in which these contribute to risk for eating disorders
  2. 2 Critically review external influences on self-regulation of eating behavior in “normal” populations, with a particular focus on what can be learned and translated to clinical treatment settings
  3. 3 Discuss how new insights into eating behaviors from public health and community perspectives can inform or should be limited in application to clinical interventions to address disordered eating in patients with eating disorders
