About the Course

This course discusses the use of language as a determining factor in outcome. Though previous research showed mixed results, the authors hypothesized that use of the word “we” was predictive for greater days abstinent. Communal coping and togetherness are believed facilitate better treatment outcomes. And the use of “we” and decreased use of “I” or “you” are indicative of better communal coping and togetherness, then it sans to reason these pronouns can be prediction. These observations are correlational, not causal. A detailed explanation of methodology is included.

Dr. Hallgren is a clinical psychologist with research interests in treatments for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. He has conducted most of his research at the BRiTE Center within the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Barbara S. McCrady, PhD
Dr. McCrady is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of New Mexico. Her research interests include improving treatments for persons affected by alcohol and other drug problems through the development of empirically supported treatments, including approaches that involve the social network, cognitive behavioral therapy, mutual help groups, and therapies for women. Her works has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
