About the Course

This course examines Measurement-Based Care (MBC) using Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and psychological intervention for patients who meet the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) as measured by Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO). It includes: why we need an MBC approach, MBC using DSM-5 symptoms, practical proposals for MBC, and MBC research.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Measurement-based Care Using DSM-5 for Opioid Use Disorder: Can We Make Opioid Medication Treatment More Effective? created by John Marsden et al. in 2019.

John Marsden

John Marsden PhD, PgDip CBT, BABCP is Professor of Addiction Psychology at the Addictions Department, Institute of psychiatry, psychology and neuroscience, Kings College London. Holding professional appointments in the Addictions treatment and research field since 1987, John is a clinical research psychologist and cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and a senior member of the addictions department. He has held research grants from a range of public finders of research in the UK and overseas, with a focus on the development and evaluation of novel psychological and medication-assisted treatments for opioid, stimulant and alcohol use disorders. John is the Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Addiction.

Betty Tai, PhD

Dr. Tai is Director of the Center for the Clinical Trials Network at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). She has been recognized for her leadership of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network and her instrumental role in defining future research issues and identifying new avenues for collaboration within the Network. She has had her work published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
