About the Course

This training is to increase counselors’ ability to structure group sessions in a way that increases efficiency and effectiveness, while maintaining their proper focus. Participants will also increase their understanding of the counselor's role when facilitating a chemical dependency group and learn specific strategies to aid clients in processing and coping with uncomfortable emotions.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Group Counseling for Chemical Dependence created by Bob Tyler, LAADC-CA, SAP, ACRPS in 2019.

While working in Inpatient, Residential, and Intensive Outpatient levels of care, Bob Tyler has been working in recovery since 1990. He serves as Compliance Officer at L.A. CADA, is owner of Bob Tyler Recovery Services (consulting, CD private practice, public speaking), is Past President of CAADAC, and taught the ethics course at LMU Extension in the Alcohol and Drug Studies Program for several years. He authored the EVVY Award-winning book, Enough Already! A Guide to Recovery from Alcohol and Drug Addiction, and has produced several educational DVD’s shown in over 1000 treatment centers across the country, including Craving and Relapse.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss the importance of group rules and consistent enforcement of them to protect the group from distractions.
  2. 2 Identify how to help clients identify and process uncomfortable emotions that were previously avoided by drinking and using, while being mindful of scope of practice.
  3. 3 Describe to structure a group where the counselor gives way to group members for feedback to one other, therefore decreasing dependence on the counselor.
