About the Course

This article focuses on addressing the opioid overdose crisis in Oconee County, a rural area in northwest South Carolina. The research investigates demographic and attitudinal factors influencing community support for harm reduction and recovery services, including syringe services programs and safe consumption sites. Utilizing a 46-item survey distributed primarily through social media, the study assesses beliefs towards opioid use disorder (OUD) and related treatments. Results indicate low overall support, particularly among older and unemployed individuals, suggesting a need for enhanced community awareness and reduced stigma towards OUD.

Moonseong Heo, PhD (Statistics)

Dr. Heo is a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University. His research interests include clinical trial design and analysis, obesity epidemiology and opioid use disorder epidemiology. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.
