About the Course

The article “Personal recovery for special populations: a qualitative study exploring the role of special interest meetings within 12-step fellowships” investigates how Special Interest Meetings (SIMs) in 12-step fellowships support the recovery of special populations such as young people, women, and LGBTQIA+ members. Through in-depth interviews with 12 participants, the study explores the role of SIMs in enhancing recovery experiences using the CHIME-D framework, which includes elements of Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning in life, Empowerment, and Difficulties. The study identifies four “Special Population Pathways” for recovery and highlights the importance of tailored support in overcoming challenges like discrimination and exclusion. The findings emphasize the necessity of SIMs in providing deeper connections, improved recovery outcomes, and a sense of empowerment for special populations.

This course is based on the reading online article, Personal Recovery For Special Populations: created by Frankco Harris, (Dphil Criminology student) in 2024.
