About the Course

This systematic review explores the role of Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) and recovery coaching in addressing Substance Use Disorder (SUD). PRSS involve peer-driven mentoring, education, and support provided by individuals with lived recovery experience to assist those struggling with SUD. The study evaluates existing literature on PRSS across various treatment settings, highlighting positive outcomes such as reduced substance use, improved treatment retention, and greater satisfaction. However, methodological limitations, inconsistencies in peer role definitions, and a lack of rigorous research remain challenges. The authors emphasize the need for further investigation to standardize PRSS roles, develop training guidelines, and identify conditions under which these services are most effective.

This course is based on the reading online article, Lived Experience in New Models of Care for Substance Use Disorder created by David Eddie, Ph.D. et al in 2019.
