About the Course

This study examines the connection between problem gambling and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), emphasizing their strong correlation and the resulting negative health impacts. While prior research suggests that enhanced well-being can reduce ACE-related harms, this study investigates whether flourishing mental health influences the relationship between ACEs and gambling behaviors. The findings confirmed that ACEs are linked to higher levels of gambling severity. However, unexpectedly, flourishing mental health generally did not moderate this relationship, with the exception of one specific ACE. These results offer important insights into how individual ACEs shape gambling behaviors and underscore the complex interaction between childhood adversity, mental health, and gambling outcomes.

This course is based on the reading online article, Risky Gambling Behaviors: Associations With Mental Health and a History of Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs created by Lindsay A. Bristow et al in 2021.
