Stigmatizing Imagery for Substance Use Disorders

a qualitative exploration

About the Course

This study explores the impact of stigmatizing imagery associated with substance use disorders (SUD) and its influence on individuals with lived experience. Through qualitative methods, researchers identified images that reinforce negative stereotypes and examined alternatives that promote more accurate and respectful representations. Findings highlight how certain images—such as those depicting drug use, criminal justice involvement, and distress—can perpetuate stigma and even trigger individuals in recovery. The study provides recommendations for non-stigmatizing imagery to inform media, research, and public health communications.

This course is based on the reading online article, Stigmatizing Imagery for Substance Use Disorders created by Jessica Hulsey et al in 2023.
