Social Media Interventions for Risky Drinking Among Adolescents and Emerging Adults

A Randomized Controlled Trial

About the Course

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of two social media–delivered interventions aimed at reducing risky drinking among adolescents and emerging adults (ages 16–24). Participants were recruited nationwide via Facebook and Instagram and assigned to one of three groups: a social media intervention with incentives, a non-incentivized social media intervention, or an attention-placebo control group. Trained e-coaches facilitated secret Facebook groups using motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral strategies. While all groups showed reductions in alcohol use over time, only the incentivized group showed significant reductions in drug use, drug-related consequences, and cannabis-impaired driving. The findings suggest that incentive-based engagement strategies can enhance the effectiveness of digital interventions targeting substance use.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Randomized Controlled Trial of Social Media Interventions for Risky Drinking among Adolescents and Emerging Adults created by Erin E. Bonar et al in 2022.
