About the Course

This course explores how to identify marginalized community members and mobilize broader community efforts to prevent substance misuse. Participants will examine the extent of substance use within marginalized populations, strategies for identifying and engaging at-risk groups, and the application of the Social-Ecological Model. The course also covers key mobilization strategies, degrees of community participation, and effective methods for fostering sustained community engagement.

Earl N. Benjamin-Robinson, DrHSc, CPH
Earl Nupsius Benjamin-Robinson has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and organizations. In 2023, they became the Director of the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (OCOE) at the Louisiana Cancer Research Center. Prior to this, they served as the Director of Tobacco Control & Prevention and Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) at the Louisiana Public Health Institute since 2021. At Xavier University of Louisiana, they worked as an Adjunct Public Health Sciences Faculty starting in 2019. Earl Nupsius Benjamin-Robinson has a diverse education history. Earl Nupsius holds a Doctor of Health Science (DrHSc) degree with an applied research focus on the implementation of social determinants of health approaches from Nova Southeastern University. Additionally, they have a certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.
Michael L. Benjamin-Robinson, DSW, LCSW-BACS
Dr. Benjamin-Robinson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience. He utilizes an eclectic and dynamic counseling style that fosters a culturally sensitive and non-judgmental therapeutic experience. He is deeply involved in social justice initiatives with the New Orleans Association of Black Social Workers and the 100 Black Men of Greater New Orleans. Dr. Benjamin-Robinson is a clinical social work faculty member at Southern University at New Orleans School of Social Work.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
