About the Event

The demand for palliative care, specialized care for those with chronic and/or serious but incurable illness, is on the rise. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 50 million people globally require palliative treatment each year. That number will only continue to increase as the Baby Boomers age and the long term effects of disease such as COVID19 become apparent.

What is the role of the massage therapist when it comes to providing palliative care? And considering the fact that the early delivery of palliative care can curb hospital visits and costly medical services, are we doing the most we can to benefit our clients? Are there techniques that we can use to safely alleviate their suffering and effectively improve their quality of life? How can the incorporation of essential oils enhance and expedite their experience?

The Mind/Body Connection: Massage, Aromatherapy, and Palliative Care will answer all of these questions and more as we thoroughly examine the intersection between massage, aromatherapy, and palliative care. Students will also learn how to identify essential oils that are appropriate for therapeutic use, including seven essential oils that no palliative care provider should be without.

Barbara Lynn Cantone, LMT, LE, CCA, EOLD, OM

Barbara Lynn Cantone is a NYS-licensed massage therapist and aesthetician, a nationally certified clinical aromatherapist, private end-of-life doula, and ordained minister. She has founded and operated two wellness companies during her career, Body & Soul Restorations and Sojourner Wellness. She is currently working on completing her first novel while continuing to teach and research and publish wellness-based articles and presentations under the umbrella of her latest endeavor, Salty Oyster Media.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

1 Investigate the role of the massage therapist when it comes to providing palliative care, including techniques to employ therapeutically.
2 Learn how to utilize the powerful combination of massage and aromatherapy in order to best serve clients receiving palliative care.
3 Examine and list the therapeutic qualities of seven essential oils used regularly in palliative care environments.
