About the Course

The Nature of Emotion: Fundamental Questions, edited by Paul Ekman, Ph.D., and Richard J. Davidson, Ph.D., puts 12 important questions about emotion to 24 leading emotion theorists. For example; Are there basic emotions? How do you distinguish emotions from moods, temperament, and emotional traits? Can we control our emotions? Can emotions be non-conscious? What is the relation between emotion and memory? What develops in emotional development? Each chapter addresses a different one of these fundamental questions about emotion, with often divergent answers from several leading researchers. Their often-conflicting answers are then compared by the editors, and in the last chapter, the editors describe research that might resolve some of these issues in the future.

Paul Ekman, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. from Adelphi University. Dr. Ekman received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association in 1991. His interests have focused on the expression and physiology of emotion and interpersonal deception. Richard J. Davidson, Ph.D., is William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Dr. Davidson's major research interests include cortical and subcortical substrates of emotion and affective disorders, including depression and anxiety.
