About the Course

Written by an author who has lived with chronic pain, “Pain Management Psychotherapy is an up-to-date comprehensive guide for the psychological treatment of chronic pain. It provides a research-based, short-term therapy model that integrates proven clinical techniques. It features detailed instructions for assessing patients’ pain and implementing pain management techniques. It provides step-by-step treatment methods – from initial consultation through termination of treatment. Described are brief, solution-oriented pain treatment strategies that work in a managed care environment. Demonstrated are the latest therapy techniques such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), imaging, relaxation and self-hypnosis. Included are pain inventories, questionnaires and other assessment tools to assist the clinician in defining and managing patient problems.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 assess hypnotic susceptibility as a basis for choosing the appropriate method for teaching self hypnosis for patient self management of chronic pain
  2. 2 utilize at least three Cognitive therapy techniques to reduce emotional overlay associated with chronic pain syndromes
  3. 3 to be able to utilize a clinical interview and relevant psychological tests to assess pain patients and prepare an appropriate report with psychotherapeutic treatment recommendations
  4. 4 to be able to acquire an understanding of basic pain mechanisms and pain management concepts and utilize this understanding to classify different types of pain and pain syndromes
