About the Course

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about trauma experienced by children. Whether unfamiliar or familiar with some of the concepts involved in this material, you can benefit from information in this course.
There are many traumatic experiences that cause a child to become scared – from divorce to the death of a loved one, from natural disasters to abuse. Even a disturbing news event that a child only sees on television or hears about but does not experience, such as the Oklahoma City bombing or the classroom massacre in Columbine, can make a child fearful or sad. This book provides you with knowledge you need to help children be put back on the path to a full and happy life. The authors, are the first to adapt critical incident debriefing to help children overcome a traumatic experience. They’re detailed instructional guide begins by introducing the concept of trauma and its effects on people. You will then explore diverse causes of trauma in children of different ages. The second section consists of a four-step debriefing process professionals and parents can use to help children cope with a traumatic event. Examples of how the procedure works are presented in separate chapters on death, abuse, natural disasters, divorce, illness and injury, and trauma by proxy. The final segment contains resources parents may need in helping a child through a trauma
