In the age of the global pandemic and the worldwide mental health crisis, we need to make mental health accessible and relatable. Using popular culture as a bridge for understanding and skill building can be an empowering tool in every provider’s toolbox. Worldwide fascination with popular culture, including Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, and the Avengers is at its all-time high and with good reason. For decades now, these films, books, and TV shows have reflected people's mental health struggles, including PTSD, grief, anxiety, and depression. This keynote will focus on how elements of popular culture can be incorporated into evidence-based therapies to treat PTSD and other mental health disorders, as well as to strengthen rapport with clients, and to increase compliance to treatment. No previous experience with popular culture necessary. Capes are optional.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Explain the concept of Superhero Therapy
  2. Demonstrate how to incorporate pop culture examples into treatment
  3. Create a treatment plan using Superhero Therapy

Since Codependent No More became a self-help book sensation nearly 40 years ago, we’ve seen a torrent of book titles, articles, workshops, and even whole therapy centers centered around codependence work as a therapy concept. Codependency is the modality that we know. But codependency has never been formalized as a diagnosis in the DMS or the ICD. In fact, there has never been a formal, criteria-based addiction or mental health diagnosis for the “issue” that we call codependency. So, what does this mean to our work today? Which one of the 340+ books on this topic holds the “right” method? Perhaps codependency requires a review for 2020. This thought-provoking talk by treatment specialist, author, and speaker Dr. Robert Weiss LCSW asks attendees to question old assumptions and consider new ideas, ensuring the work we provide remains strength-based, useful, and deeply compassionate.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss the codependency model and its efficacy in 2020.
  2. Develop three new skills to intervene upon the loved ones of addicts.
  3. Differentiate a trauma-based treatment model from an attachment-based model.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a global public health crisis and along with that a growing and largely hidden mental health crisis of anxiety, fear, and even depression. Failing to meet the unmet mental health burden of excessive anxiety and fear is likely to have far reaching consequences, exceeding those linked with the COVID-19 virus itself. Though anxiety and fear are normal responses to threat, suffering with anxiety and fear is different, mostly unnecessary, and linked with various costs. In this session, we will explore why that is so and also what can be done about it by drawing up insights from a newer evidence-based approach to psychological health and wellness called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is a process-based approach that addresses the root sources of many forms of human suffering, while offering powerful strategies to transmute human suffering without first having to change or modify painful thoughts and feelings. It calls for balancing mindfulness and acceptance processes with commitment and behavior change in the service of living a more vital life. This body of work offers a fresh perceptive on anxious suffering and powerful clinical strategies to cultivate transformative life changes, even during these challenging times.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe six core ACT processes that contribute to a good deal of psychological and emotional suffering with anxiety and fear
  2. Identify six ACT intervention processes that can be applied for various forms of anxious suffering
  3. Apply several ACT intervention strategies to help clients transform their relationship with anxiety, fear, and stress and do more of what matters to them during the pandemic and beyond

COVID-19 is a unique public health emergency, made more challenging as everyone in the United States and around the world has been impacted. Children and their families are experiencing high levels of anxiety, worry, and fear. Families with mental health concerns before COVID-19 are at increased risk for mental health challenges since COVID-19 began. Issues of social injustice are superimposed on the impact of COVID-19, further increasing the need for mental health services. Finally, providers of services are also impacted as they continue to offer services to children and families while balancing the new needs of their own families and loved ones. As mental health professionals, COVID-19 has not changed that we care, but has changed how we care. This presentation will address the unique features of COVID-19 and how children and families are impacted as well as how mental health disparities and anti-racism is further affecting families. Specific ideas and skills will be offered to use in our mental health efforts with families. Finally, the importance of self-care for providers, with specific recommendations, will be offered

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Identify at least 3 ways that children/teens may demonstrate reactions to COVID-19
  2. Explain how existing mental health concerns, COVID-19, and social injustice intersect for children and families
  3. Describe at least 3 ways providers can work with families to address the impact of COVID-19 on their children and increase their resilience.
