About the Course

Noting that sexual abuse in childhood can cause physical as well as mental harm later in life, a team of behavioral scientists and psychologists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Mental Health, present a collection of 14 papers that connect current scientific literature, basic trauma research, and clinical practice. Research into the connections between childhood abuse and social, psychological, behavioral, and health outcomes are summarized and theorized before intervention strategies are described.

Dr. Koenig is the assistant chief for behavioral science in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Mother-Child Transmission and Pediatric/Adolescent Studies Section, Division of HIV/AIDS prevention. Dr. Doll is associate director for science of the National Center for Injury Prevention at the CDC. Dr. O'Leary is a senior behavioral scientist at the CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Research Branch. Dr. Pequegnat is the associate director at the Center for Mental Health Research on AIDS at the National Institute of Mental Health.
