About the Course

Best Possible Odds is the first comprehensive step-by-step guide to the assessment and treatment of compulsive gamblers and their families. Based upon the authors’ extensive firsthand experience, it arms mental health professionals with a rational framework for making sense of the often puzzling behaviors of compulsive gamblers, providing an array of tools and techniques for successful interventions. The authors clearly define the factors that distinguish recreational from pathological gambling and explore the reasons why compulsive gambling is on the rise. They analyze the various competing models of gambling pathology, and they draw upon recent empirical and clinical data to make the most persuasive argument yet for officially reclassifying compulsive gambling as an addiction disorder. The authors assess the entire range of major treatment modalities currently in use and provide clear-cut guidelines for mixing and matching modalities to fit the unique requirements of each individual patient.

This course is based on the book, Best Possible Odds: Contemporary Treatment Strategies for Gambling Disorders created by William G. McCown, Ph.D., and Linda L. Chamberlain Psy.D.
