About the Course

This guide is designed to be used as a companion to the Weinstein Company movie, TRANSAMERICA, which can be rented or purchased in DVD or VHS format from a vendor of the user’s choice. It will explain, demonstrate and guide participants in the application of knowledge about transgenderism, including definitions, assessment, diagnosis, gender reassignment surgery, standards of care, trauma, victimization, medical and mental health treatment addressing family, parenting, vocational, substance abuse and HIV issues. The movie portrays a textbook example of a person who is transitioning from a male to a female and is valuable for learning about transgenderedism. It should be emphasized that the “Hollywood effect” may tend to over/under exaggerate the issues.

Note: This course is based on an e-book which is available for purchase from BeneficialFilmGuides.com. Obtain this material by clicking “Get Course Material”. It’s not necessary to purchase the movie. It can be rented from a local video store. However, if you choose to purchase the DVD a link is provided for your convenience.

This course is based on the reading online article and dvd, Transgenderism: A Case Study of the Movie TRANSAMERICA created by Francine R.Goldberg, Ph.D.
