About the Course

Decades of scientific research and clinical practice have yielded a variety of effective approaches to drug addiction treatment. Research also has revealed a set of overarching principles that characterize the most effective drug abuse and addiction treatments and their implementation. This update of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment is intended to address addiction to a wide variety of drugs including nicotine, alcohol, and illicit and prescription drugs. It is designed to serve as a resource for health care providers, family
members, and other stakeholders trying to address the myriad problems faced by patients in need of treatment for drug abuse or addiction.

  2. 2 Explain the usage of behavioral techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, community reinforcement approaches, contingency management interventions, and motivational enhancement therapy in the treatment of addictive behaviors.
  3. 3 Describe the usage of the matrix model,12-step facilitation therapy, behavioral couples therapy, and behavioral treatments for adolescents when addressing substance abuse disorders.
