About the Course

This course is based on the Executive Summary, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 from Treatment Improvement Protocol TIP 51. A new TIP has been published and new courses are available based on the updated information 102512 and 102513.

Executive Summary of Substance Abuse Treatment: Addressing the Specific Needs of Women endorses a biopsychosociocultural framework based on clinical practice and research centered on women. The primary goal of this TIP is to assist substance abuse treatment providers in offering effective, up-to-date treatment to adult women with substance use disorders.

Creating the Context (Chapter 1) proposes that substance abuse treatment for women be approached from a perspective that encompasses the contexts of women's lives. These contexts include a women's social and economic environment; her relationships with family, extended family, and support systems; and the impact of gender and culture.

Patterns of Use: From Initiation to Treatment (Chapter 2) addresses patterns of substance use, abuse, and dependence using a continuum beginning with initial risk factors and concluding with common attributes associated with women entering treatment for substance use disorders.
