About the Course

The current study explored the clinical meaningfulness of distinguishing subjective (SBE) from objective binge eating (OBE) among individuals with threshold/subthreshold bulimia nervosa (BN). We examined relations between OBEs and SBEs and eating disorder symptoms, negative affect, and personality dimensions using both a group comparison and a continuous approach.

This course is based on the reading online article, Subjective and Objective Binge Eating in Relation to Eating Disorder Symptomatology Negative Affect and Personality Dimensions: Volume 46 Issue 1 created by Lisa M. Brownstone, MA et al

Target Audience

This course is recommended for mental health and medical professionals likely to encounter disordered eating in their clinical practices (e.g. Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists, and Counseling Psychologists) who seek knowledge about variants of binge eating in the context of bulimia nervosa.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Cite examples of behaviors, co-morbid difficulties, and personality characteristics associated with binge eating episodes that are subjectively large in size (SBEs).
  2. 2 Apply knowledge about subjective binge eating to clinical practice (e.g., by seeing SBEs as clinically concerning and potential markers of broader psychopathology).
  3. 3 Describe how anxiety and depression at a trait level may be associated with SBE and how the function of SBEs may differ from the function of OBEs in relation to negative affect.
