About the Course

This course is based on a series of web recordings covering the basics of Acceptance and Commitment Training and Therapy (ACT). Learners can watch individual chapters about the ACT point of view, theory of language and cognition, and then basic interventions based on the theory of language. The interventions presented are appropriate for a wide variety of contexts such as work, school and the clinic. The purpose of the course is to give learners grounding in the "back stage" topics of the ACT to enrich both training and clinical work.

Dr. Polk is a peer-reviewed trainer of Acceptance and Commitment Training and Therapy (ACT). He has conducted hundreds of trainings and done close to 30,000 hours of ACT training and therapy. He is best known for creating the Matrix diagram, and elegant way of showing others the core ACT processes and interventions. He is the head of the Psychological Flexibility Group, who give online and in-person ACT trainings around the world.

Target Audience

This course is recommended for mental health clinicians who seek knowledge about training, consulting, supervision and clinical work with ACT. It is appropriate for an introductory level of participants' knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  2. 2 Recall the basics of the theory of language that ACT is based upon (RFT).
  3. 3 Explain why ACT is often called The Psychological Flexibility Model.

  5. 5 Identify the simple diagram of ACT called The Matrix.
  6. 6 Discuss ACT's focus on perspective taking to increase psychological flexibility.
