About the Course

This online webinar "Best Practice in Disruptive Event Management for the Workplace" will teach participants about the nature of disruptive events and best practices in organizing and effecting a response. You will have the opportunity to increase and develop skills in: organizing a response, selecting the appropriate response, conducting Educational Group Briefings, One-on-Ones, and Interactive Group Briefings. You will be able to identify themes for any event and identify teaching strategies to use. You will become familiar with assisting leadership in their response, providing stress management and coping techniques, and in the importance of self-care for everyone involved.

Dennis Potter, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, FAAETS

Dennis Potter, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, FAAETS, serves as Director, Training and Consultant Relations for the R3 Continuum. He is a licensed social worker and certified addiction counselor. Dennis has received training and supervision in Cognitive Therapy from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, PA. He has participated in a train the trainer courses in Motivational Interviewing and has provided this training to a variety of mental health, substance abuse agencies and in the business community.

Jeff Gorter, MSW

Jeff Gorter, MSW, serves as the Clinical Director, EAP Liaison for R3 Continuum. Mr. Gorter brings over 27 years of clinical experience including consultation and extensive on-site critical incident response to businesses and communities. He has responded directly to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the Virginia Tech shootings, the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill, and the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. He has conducted trainings and presented at the APA Annual Conference, the World Conference on Disaster Management, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and at other state, national, and international venues on a variety of topics, including critical incident response.

Gordon Greer LMSW ACSW CAADC

Gordon Greer LMSW ACSW CAADC, serves as Director, Productivity Assurance Call Center at R3 Continuum. He has been a respected mental health clinician in the Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area for over fifteen years. He earned his degree in English secondary education from Indiana University (IUPUI), and his master's degree in clinical social work from Western Michigan University. Before joining R3 in 2015, Gordon worked at Forest View Hospital for more than a decade, with a specialization in psychiatric case management, adolescent/adult behavioral health, family therapy, group therapy, and the field of traumatic stress. He also coordinated Forest View's regionally and nationally regarded Psychological Trauma Program, with a specialization in dissociative disorders and conditions related to traumatic stress.

Judy Beahan, MSW

Judy Beahan, MSW. From 1988 – 1998 Judy worked as an Employee Assistance Program Account Executive providing management consultation, training, program development, and customized workplace interventions. From 1998 – 2010 Judy served in program development and managerial roles in behavioral healthcare, served on crisis response teams and maintained a practice as a licensed therapist. Additionally, Judy is a trained mediator, EMDR Level I, certified Journal to the Self Instructor, and certified QPR Gatekeeper Instructor for Suicide Prevention.

Course Creator

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

Target Audience

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors and social workers. It is appropriate for all levels of participants.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 To apply and practice skills in organizing a response, selecting the appropriate responses, conducting educational group briefings, conducting one-on-ones, and conducting interactive group briefings.
  2. 2 To identify at least 3 common themes for any event.
  3. 3 To identify 3 teaching strategies.
  4. 4 To list 2 reasons to use an Educational Group Briefing instead of an Interactive Group Briefing.
  5. 5 To identify four stress management topics for Critical Incidents.
