Target Audience

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about which special populations are at an increased risk for suicide. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify groups with increased suicide risk.
  2. 2 Explain the reasons why American Indians/Alaska Natives, individuals bereaved by suicide, those in justice and welfare settings, people who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury, and individuals who have attempted suicide are populations who are at high-risk for suicide.
  3. 3 Describe the proactive factors of suicide for individuals with medical conditions, people with mental health and/or substance use disorders, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered populations, members of the Armed Forces and veterans, men in midlife; and older men.
