About the Course

Meeting the mental health needs of juvenile offenders is one of the most important issues affecting juvenile justice systems across the nation. Juvenile offenders with mental health problems are more likely to continue to experience justice system involvement. This report addresses the issue of mental illness in the justice system, and describes the mental health screening and assessment tools used by practitioners within the Illinois juvenile justice system. Recommendations for best practice in the mental health screening and assessment of justice-involved youth are provided.
