About the Course

Purging disorder, an “other specified eating disorder” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, has an emerging literature, but driven exercise as a potential “purging” behavior has received minimal attention because it is not currently included or discussed in the diagnostic criteria. This article compares the psychopathology of individuals who reported regular driven exercise in the absence of binge eating with individuals who reported regular vomiting/laxative misuse in the absence of binge eating. These “purging” groups were compared with two groups: individuals with broadly-defined anorexia nervosa, and individuals who denied eating-disorder behaviors. In addition to eating disorder psychopathology and behaviors, groups were also compared on depression and overall physical activity levels.

This course is based on the article, Driven Exercise in the Absence of Binge Eating: Implications for Purging Disorder created by Janet Lydecker, PhD., et al. in 2017.
