About the Course

The author asserts that one humanistic cognitive-behavioral approach with increasing attention in sport psychology literature is that of Albert Ellis' (1957) Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Like other cognitive behavioral interventions, REBT asserts that it is not events that directly cause emotions and behaviors; instead, it is one's beliefs about the events that lead to emotional and behavioral reactivity. This article provides a literature review to highlight three important areas of investigation that may help apply REBT to the field of sports psychology.

Martin J Turner, PhD

Dr. Martin J. Turner is a Reader in Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is most known for his work applying rational emotive behaviour theory (REBT) within achievement settings, and the effects of stress and adversity on human wellbeing and performance. Martin has published his research widely, in over 50 peer reviewed papers, and various book chapters, and books. He is a frequent keynote/invited speaker at academic conferences and industry events, delivering CPD workshops to fellow professionals and trainees, and delivering consultancy across private and public sectors.

Dr. Henderson completed her PhD in clinical psychology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda MD, and my internship at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Medical Center in San Antonio TX. She is am an integrative therapist who focuses on brief, positive, solutions-focused therapy and is experienced in treating a variety of mental health concerns-- depression, anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, parenting concerns, and more. She is currently practicing in Alaska.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers, especially those who work with athletes. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:
