About the Course

This article examines the often complex relationship between ethical practice and decision making processes in mental health care when applied to a patient population holding widely differing cultural values, attitudes, and beliefs. In this article, the authors review how multiculturalism and cultural competence present themselves in mental health care, and discuss the cultural underpinnings of bioethics. The article also presents five clinical cases to display the range of ethical issues faced by mental health clinicians working in a multicultural environment. These issues include dealing with therapeutic boundaries, diagnosis, treatment choice, confidentiality, and informed consent, and the just distribution of limited health care resources.

This course is based on the reading online article, Ethics and Culture in Mental Health Care created by Jinger G. Hoop et al in 2008.
