About the Course

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been called the “signature injury” of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM (OIF/OEF), in no small part due to the consequences of improvised explosive devices (e.g., blast overpressure). Of increasing concern is the long term effects of mTBIs, particularly given the prevalence of PTSD and comorbid mTBI/PTSD. This article presents the results of a study whose aim was to determine whether participants with a history of mTBI and current PTSD (mTBI + PTSD) have poorer cognitive and psychological outcomes than participants with mTBI only (mTBI-o), PTSD only (PTSD-o), or veteran controls (VC).

Dr. Hannah L. Combs is a Clinical Neuropsychologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates. She holds appointments as Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology in the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology of the Houston Methodist Academic Institute, Assistant Clinical Member of the Houston Methodist Research Institute, and Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology in Clinical Neurology through Weill Cornell Medical College. Her research interests involve understanding cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease and effects of deep brain stimulation on non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders. Dr. Combs is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has presented her work at multiple national and international conferences.

Dr. Henderson completed her PhD in clinical psychology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda MD, and my internship at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Medical Center in San Antonio TX. She is am an integrative therapist who focuses on brief, positive, solutions-focused therapy and is experienced in treating a variety of mental health concerns-- depression, anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, parenting concerns, and more. She is currently practicing in Alaska.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who work with veterans. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.
