About the Course

This course is intended to provide counseling competencies for working with and advocating for members of the multiracial population. This population would include interracial couples, multiracial families and individuals, LGBT indivduals and families, LGBQQIA individuals and families and transracial adoptees and families. The competencies discussed in the article are meant to serve as a resource for how behavioral health professional can competently and effectively work with and advocate for these populations.

This course is based on the article, Competencies for Counseling the Multiracial Population created by Kelley R. Kenney, Ed.D. et al. in 2015.

Kelley R. Kenney, Ed.D.
Dr. Kelley Kenney is a nationally and internationally known figure in the fields of counseling and higher education. She has worked in higher education for over 35 years - in college counseling; student academic advisement and support; graduate level teaching in the areas of counseling and student affairs; and in the coordination and direction of higher education graduate programs. Dr. Kenney is also recognized for her diversity and inclusion work and advocacy, specifically related to multiracial individuals and families.
Mark E. Kenney, M.Ed, NCC, LPC
Mark is a Psychology Coordinator at DeSales University Program. He is a co-author of the book Counseling Multiracial Families.

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

Target Audience

Counselors, therapists, mental health professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, adoptive and child protective social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Recognize the unique issues of the multiracial, multiethnicities and LBGT, and LGBQQIA populations.
  2. 2 Recognize providers own biases
  3. 3 Adapt counseling practices to these populations.
