About the Course

Today’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth and those questioning their sexual orientation and gender identity, come out at younger ages, and public support for LGBT issues has dramatically increased, so why do LGBT youth continue to be at high risk for compromised mental health? We provide an overview of the contemporary context for LGBT youth, followed by a review of current science on LGBT youth mental health. Implications for clinical care are discussed, and important areas for new research and practice are identified.

Please note that there are two articles for this course and both are needed to complete the exam.

Stephen T. Russell, Ph.D.
Stephen Russell, Ph.D. is Priscilla Pond Flawn Regents Professor in Child Development and the Department Chair, Human Development and Family Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. He is affiliated faculty with the Department of Sociology, LGBT Studies, and the Population Research Center. He studies adolescent development, with an emphasis on adolescent sexuality, LGBT youth, and parent-adolescent relationships. Much of his research is guided by a commitment to create social change to support healthy adolescent development.
Brian Mustanski, PhD
Dr. Mustanski is an Associate Professor in Medical Social Sciences and director of the IMPACT LGBT Health and Development Program in the Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS) and the IPHAM Center for Community Health. His primary research interests are in LGBT health disparities, particularly in the areas of HIV, substance use, and mental health, and in the developmental periods of adolescence through emerging adulthood. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Clinicians treating LGBT youth and their families. This course is appropriate for all knowledge levels.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify increased rates of depression, suicidality, PTSD and anxiety among LGBT youth.
  2. 2 Extrapolate familial, social, community and school-based risk factors
  3. 3 Classify those at risk for MDD, PTSD and anxiety
