About the Course

This systematic review uses current methods to update a report published in 2013 that evaluated psychological and pharmacological treatments of adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This review focuses on expanding the range of treatments examined, addressing earlier uncertainties, identifying ways to improve care for PTSD patients, and reducing variation in existing treatment guidelines.

This course is based on the article, Psychological and Pharmacological Treatments for Adults With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review Update created by Valerie Forman-Hoffman, Ph.D., M.P.H. et al. in 2018.

Valerie Forman-Hoffman, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Forman‑Hoffman is a research epidemiologist at RTI International and lead author on multiple studies. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Jennifer Cook Middleton, Ph.D.
Dr. Middleton works with RTI International–University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Evidence-based Practice Center Research Triangle Park, NC. She has many years of experience as a behavioral and social science researcher and has worked extensively in the areas of health services and public health research. Her most recent projects have focused on the treatment of PTSD, major depressive disorder, heart failure readmissions, physician house calls, dementia care, and arthritis. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Cynthia Feltner, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Feltner is associate director of the RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center as well as an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at UNC. She also core faculty in Public Health Leadership Program at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and serve as the concentration lead for the master of public health (MPH) concentration in Population Health for Clinicians.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers treating PTSD and researchers. This course is appropriate for advanced levels of clinicians.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify three treatment options for PTSD including psychological therapy and pharmacotherapies.
  2. 2 Evaluate the more effective treatments with moderate or high strength of evidence.
  3. 3 Extrapolate the data based on the age of onset, type of trauma and gender of patient.
