About the Course

This course explores the treatment of alcohol dependence, cannabis dependence, cocaine dependence, opioid dependence and gambling using computer-based health interventions comprised of behavioral therapy, both guided and self-directed. Treatment types were varied, using CBT, MI and TES, and TES with MMT. The treatments were found to be statistically significant, but with a small effect over treatment as usual. However, for gambling, the drop-out rate was over 97% with the experimental group and 83% in the wait list group and the treatment was not deemed effective. Patients with substantial substance abuse treatment history were the most likely to benefit using TES.

This course is based on the article, e-Therapy Interventions for the Treatments of Substance Use Disorders and Other Addictions: A Review of Clinical Effectiveness created by Canadian Agency for Drug and Technologies in Health in 2017 and the article, Can persons with a history of multiple addiction treatment episodes benefit from technology delivered behavior therapy? A moderating role of treatment history at baseline created by Sunny Jung Kim, PhD. et al. in 2016.
