This course addresses challenges facing a rural opioid epidemic for the treatment and prevention of HIV and Hepatitis C. This course includes: current epidemiological trends in HIV and HCV among PWID, barriers that prevent rural PWID from accessing HIV and HCV testing and treatment, the efficacy of HIV and HCV treatment among PWID, optimizing HIV and HCV treatment outcomes among PWID, current best practices in HIV and HCV prevention among PWID, and Learning from Scott County, Indiana: Addressing Risks in Ohio and North Carolina.

Asher J. Schranz, MD
Dr. Asher Schranz is an infectious disease specialist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Schranz’s clinical interests include endovascular infections, viral hepatitis and HIV. He is also interested in caring for infectious diseases in persons with substance use disorders. His research is broadly focused on the intersection of infectious diseases and substance use disorders. He utilizes large datasets to study invasive infections – such as infective endocarditis and bone, joint and spine infections – affecting people who inject drugs, in both North Carolina and the US.
Jessica Barrett, DO
Dr. Jessica L. Barrett is an infectious disease specialist in Columbus, Ohio and is affiliated with Ohio Health Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Christopher B. Hurt, MD
Christopher B. Hurt, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Hurt serves as an investigator with the UNC Global HIV Prevention and Treatment Clinical Trials Unit, overseeing clinical trials in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and hepatitis C. Dr. Hurt’s research is focused on the behavioral epidemiology of HIV – specifically with an interest in understanding the structural and behavioral factors that influence the spread of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) of color in the Southeastern United States.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
