About the Course

This course examines contingency management (CM) in a variety of substance use disorders (including tobacco use), combined with a variety of substance use disorder treatments. It includes: a conceptual background of CM, current evidence base and rationale for review, CM in diverse communities, optimizing CM for personalized interventions, novel substance-use treatment technologies, and drug-and alcohol-use biomarkers.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Review of Contingency Management for the Treatment of Substance-use Disorders-adaptation for Underserved Populations, Use of Experimental Technologies, and Personalized Optimization Strategies created by Sterling M McPherson, PhD,et al. in 2018.

Sterling M McPherson, PhD
Dr. McPherson is Director for Biostatistics and Clinical Trial Design at the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and Associate Director of Research for Analytics and Discovery at the Providence Medical Research Center. He has led several treatment and treatment development focused projects and has significant clinical research experience having successfully recruited participants with alcohol, drug and tobacco use disorders. He has been part of 20 randomized controlled trials in the last nine years and was competitively chosen to become an NIH Fellow of the Summer Institute on Behavioral Randomized Clinical Trials. He has published 90 peer-reviewed research articles and has reviewed for more than 25 journals .
Ekaterina Burduli, PhD
Dr. Ekaterina Burduli is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at Washington State University. Dr. Burduli’s primary research focuses on the birth satisfaction and birth outcomes of women who use substances during pregnancy and the development of novel interventions for pregnant women with substance use disorders. She has more than 16 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to and led numerous grants.
Crystal Lederhos Smith, PhD
Dr. Lederhos Smith currently holds the position of Clinical Research Supervisor at the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. She is experienced in advanced quantitative analytics and multiple forms of qualitative analysis. Broadly, her research addresses Substance Abuse. She has engaged in research in the areas of marijuana, opioids, alcohol, tobacco, and methamphetamine, with a heavy emphasis on marijuana and opioids and a focus on youth and families. She has reviewed for 9 journals and has published multiple articles.

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.
