About the Course

Psychotherapeutic diagrams are drawings that summarize therapy material in a visual-spatial form. Diagrams make abstract ideas concrete, complement language with non-verbal forms of thought and communication, help clients understand their problems and the strategies used in therapy, and point the way toward change. This course presents a number of diagrams, provides instructions for developing your own, and explains how to use these conceptual pictures in therapy.

Many diagrams are well-suited to explaining and working on dialectical issues with clients, and these are the focus of this course. Dialectical diagrams show how multiple truths can co-exist, difficult issues have two sides, and the key to therapeutic progress usually lies in some form of balance and synthesis. The course draws on neuroscience research to describe the biological level of dialectical processes, and there are simple diagrams of the brain that therapists can use to help clients understand how their minds work. These visual tools are useful with children and adults across a wide range of diagnoses, and the course presents diagrams for treating anxiety, depression, perfectionism, aggression, common marital and parent-child problems, and many problems in living that don’t fit into a diagnostic category.

This course is based on the book, Psychotherapeutic Diagrams: Pathways Spectrums Feedback Loops and the Search for Balance created by Jeremy Shapiro in 2016.
