About the Course

This course examines harm reduction as an approach to treat alcohol dependence. The authors propose that it creates a better chance for compliance with treatment in a comprehensive treatment setting. A reduction in alcohol assumption can reduce risk of disease and have an impact on public health and economic costs of treatment. The article discuses anti-craving medications targeting opioid receptors through the detoxification process. The authors also address reducing stigma as barrier to treatment. The harm reduction strategy for alcoholism may be more appealing to patients than abstinence.

This course is based on the article, Harm Reduction as “Continuum Care” in Alcohol Abuse Disorder created by Icro Maremmani et al in 2015.

Icro Maremmani is Professor of Drug Addiction Medicine at the School of Psychiatry of the University of Pisa. Since 2014 he is Principal Investigator of the ‘European Opioid Treatment Patient Survey’ Program, promoted by the Denver Health and Hospital Authority, on behalf of its department at the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center (Colorado, USA), in collaboration with the European Opiate Addiction Treatment Association (EUROPAD), which has the aim of assessing overall rates of prescription drug misuse in Europe. To date, he has 500 scientific publications and has given over 300 scientific presentations.
Mauro Cibin
Mauro Cibin is the Mental Health and Addictive Behaviors department head for the Local Health Authority, Venice 30010, Italy. Mauro has published more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge the economic impact of alcohol use disorder, its impact on public health, and a progressive decline in alcohol use is beneficial.
  2. 2 Identify the proposed models of treatment for AUD.
  3. 3 Summarize that harm reduction is a valid approach for patients for whom abstinence is unappealing, or overwhelming.
