About the Course

This course defines the phenomenon, describes the typical behaviors and personal characteristics of perpetrators and the resultant negative effects on their victims. Numerous examples of emotional abuse are provided to help clinicians identify gaslighting attempts. Specific strategies are suggested for coping with the manipulations which are intending to control the victim. Finally, healing actions are presented to help victims return to their former independent levels of productive functioning.

Dr. Franzini received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, including an internship with VA Hospitals and Clinics in the Pittsburgh area and went on to become a professor at San Diego State University. He is licensed as a psychologist for independent practice in the states of California and Florida. He has consulted to publishers, schools, and businesses and is currently in private practice and writing online courses for companies offering CE units for health care professionals. He has 35+ years of university teaching, research and publishing, supervision of clinical graduate students through the postdoctoral level, and extensive speaking to professional associations both nationally and internationally.

  2. 2 Describe the typical personality characteristics and behaviors of a gaslighter, who realistically is incorrigible.
  3. 3 List the variety of settings, especially within intimate relationships, where gaslighting can be found.
  4. 4 Note the precursors of gaslighting efforts which can alert potential victims.
  5. 5 List the qualities of a person who is most vulnerable to gaslighting.
  6. 6 Identify the most frequent consequences of gaslighting in the victim.
  7. 7 Generate strategies likely to be effective in coping with gaslighting efforts.
