About the Course

Managing Suicidal Risk: A Collaborative Approach provides a suicide-specific framework for identifying, assessing, and managing suicidality in a therapeutic setting. One of the things that makes this framework unique is the spirit of collaboration between the patient and the clinician, which contributes to an empathic, narrative, noncoercive, and team-based approach to reducing or removing the suicidal wish. The CAMS approach is extremely thorough and detailed, and is supported by years of research in the field of mental health. Jobes uses this manual to describe the development of the CAMS approach, the rationale behind each section, and the step-by-step instructions for applying the CAMS philosophy in practice.

David Jobes, PhD, ABPP is a Professor of Psychology and Associate Director of Clinical Training at The Catholic University of America. He has been working and conducting research on suicidality for over 30 years, and in that time has developed and fine-tuned the CAMS approach to addressing suicidality with his team at CUA. He has worked in suicidology in the public health domain, university settings, military and veterans affairs, clinical research, and epidemiology, and has published extensively in the field. He leads professional trainings in clinical suicidology, ethics, and risk management, and has contributed significantly to the literature covering the malpractice liability for clinicians in cases of patient suicide. Dr. Jobes is a past president of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), and serves on the Scientific Council and the Public Policy Council of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and maintains a private clinical and forensic practice in Washington, DC.

Nora Balint, MS, NCC, received her degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and her National Certification in Counseling in 2002. Her volunteer and paid work in the counseling area has included creating and running parenting support groups (for birth through elementary aged children), work with the elderly, life coaching, support with the LGBTQ community, substance abuse groups, individual counseling, and technology consulting. Nora is currently a Post-Master's Fellow at The Refuge Center for Counseling in Franklin, Tennessee and is pursuing licensure as an LPC-MHSP.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe the philosophy of the CAMS approach to managing suicidality, and identify the primary objective of this approach to patient care.
  2. 2 Recognize the appropriate moment to begin an assessment of suicidality with a patient, and use appropriately direct and specific language to do so.
  3. 3 Delineate the steps and approximate number of sessions involved in CAMS-guided care, and the resolution criteria which indicate completion of the treatment approach.
  4. 4 Develop an approach to suicidality which can significantly reduce the risk of malpractice liability.
  5. 5 Evaluate opportunities to use the CAMS approach in non-traditional settings, outside of private clinical practice.
