About the Course

This course is based on the book by Lynn Louise Wonders. The book describes characteristics of high conflict divorce that distinguish it from more typical divorce cases, the challenges it presents for therapists and the children they serve, and how the therapist can recognize that a family’s situation is likely to be high conflict. Wonders outlines strategies and protocols that allow the therapist to preserve the integrity of the therapeutic relationship with the child client, that prepare and protect the therapist if summoned to appear in court, and that help therapists care for their own mental health.

Lynn Louise Wonders. LPC,RPT-S, CPCS is a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, licensed and registered in the state of Georgia as a professional counselor and supervisor. She is the Director of Wonders Counseling & Consulting Services, which provide consultation and mentoring services nationally and internationally. She is founder of Preschool Emotion Education Program, and of the Parenting with Purpose and Vision Seminar Series. Wonders is an Association for Play Therapy Approved Provider, the Early Childhood Specialist and National Spokesperson for Primrose Schools, and the Director for Wonders Wellness Institute for Women. She has taught as guest instructor for the psychology department at Berry College and for the mental health departments at Grady Hospital, Peachford Hospital and Mercy Care Center in Atlanta, GA. She teaches meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and Tai Chi & Chi Kung. She leads self-care retreats for women. Nora Balint, MS, NCC, received her degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and her National Certification in Counseling in 2002. Her volunteer and paid work in the counseling area has included creating and running parenting support groups (for birth through elementary aged children), work with the elderly, life coaching, support with the LGBTQ community, substance abuse groups, individual counseling, and technology consulting. Nora is currently a Post-Master's Fellow at The Refuge Center for Counseling in Franklin, Tennessee and is pursuing licensure as an LPC-MHSP.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify characteristics of divorces likely to be high conflict.
  2. 2 Recognize pathology, intractable dynamics, child alienation, and loyalty conflicts in families involved in high conflict divorce and will adjust treatment plans accordingly.
  3. 3 Devise strategies and protocols to prepare for subpoenas and litigation, and for dealing with attorneys and guardians ad litem.
  4. 4 Plan treatment and keep organized patient records in order to maintain focus on therapeutic goals and to explain these goals and patient progress in court if necessary.
  5. 5 Prioritize self-care, attending to their own physical, mental, and emotional health, seeking help from other professionals when needed, and will recognize the danger imposed on their health by the stress of high conflict cases.
  6. 6 Structure intake interviews which reveal in the initial screening of new clients certain "red flags" that point towards high conflict.
